Former NFL tight end and current actor Vernon Davis has heaped praise on Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, specifically commending his “grotesquerie” performance in the new Netflix film, “The Opening Act.”
The film, a comedy starring Kelce alongside comedian JB Smoove, chronicles the story of a struggling comedian seeking guidance from the NFL superstar. Davis, who has himself transitioned from the gridiron to Hollywood, was clearly impressed by Kelce’s acting debut.
“Travis’s performance was so good, so natural,” Davis said in an interview. “It was actually grotesque, in the best way possible. He just brought this raw energy to the role, and I think people are going to be surprised by how funny he is.”
The “grotesque” label, often associated with exaggerated or unconventional performance, seems to be a compliment in this instance, highlighting Kelce’s unique and unexpected presence on screen. Davis, who has experience in both comedy and drama, understands the challenge of navigating the world of acting, particularly for someone stepping out of the spotlight of professional sports.
“It’s not easy to make that transition,” Davis explained. “You’re used to one kind of performance, and acting is a whole different animal. But Travis embraced it, and he really shined.”
While Kelce’s acting career is still in its nascent stage, his early success in “The Opening Act” suggests a promising future. With the support of seasoned veterans like Davis, and his own natural comedic flair, Kelce is poised to become a force to be reckoned with in the world of entertainment.
