Teen’s Nutritional Needs
Adolescence is a critical period of growth and development, making proper nutrition essential for teens. During this time, their bodies undergo significant changes, and their nutritional needs increase to support these transformations.
Calories: Teens need more calories than at any other time in their lives. Boys typically require 2,500-3,000 calories per day, while girls need about 2,200 calories. However, these needs vary based on activity level and individual metabolism.
Protein: Essential for building and repairing tissues, protein needs increase during adolescence. Teens should aim for about 0.85 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. Good sources include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, beans, and nuts.
Carbohydrates: The primary energy source for active teens, carbs should make up about 50-60% of their diet. Focus on complex carbohydrates from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables rather than simple sugars.
Fats: Healthy fats are crucial for brain development and hormone production. About 25-30% of a teen’s calories should come from fats, primarily unsaturated fats found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish.
Calcium: With rapid bone growth during adolescence, calcium intake is critical. Teens need about 1,300 mg per day. Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods are excellent sources.
Iron: Especially important for girls due to menstruation, iron needs increase during adolescence. Good sources include lean red meat, poultry, fish, beans, and fortified cereals.
Vitamins and Minerals: A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables will provide most necessary vitamins and minerals. Key nutrients include vitamin D, B vitamins, and zinc.
Hydration: Proper hydration is often overlooked but crucial for overall health and cognitive function. Teens should aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day, more if they’re physically active.
