Present Level of Development
The Present Level of Development (PLD), also known as the Present Level of Performance (PLP) or Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP), is a crucial component of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in special education. It provides a comprehensive description of a student‘s current abilities, strengths, and needs across various domains.
Key aspects of the PLD include:
Academic performance: Current achievement levels in subjects like reading, writing, and math
Functional skills: Abilities related to daily living, social interactions, and behavior
Physical development: Motor skills, sensory processing, and health concerns
Social-emotional development: Interpersonal skills, self-regulation, and emotional well-being
Communication skills: Receptive and expressive language abilities
The PLD serves as a baseline for developing appropriate educational goals and determining necessary accommodations or modifications. It’s typically based on a variety of data sources, including standardized assessments, classroom observations, and input from teachers, parents, and other professionals.
