Introducing solid foods to your baby is an exciting milestone in their development. Typically, this process begins around 6 months of age, when your baby shows signs of readiness such as sitting up with support, good head control, and interest in your food.
Start with single-ingredient purees like rice cereal, mashed banana, or pureed sweet potato. Introduce new foods one at a time, waiting 3-5 days between each new item to watch for any allergic reactions. Gradually increase the variety and texture of foods as your baby becomes more comfortable with eating.
Remember that breast milk or formula should still be the primary source of nutrition during the first year. Solid foods are complementary and help your baby learn about different tastes and textures. Avoid honey until after the first birthday due to the risk of botulism.
As your baby grows, encourage self-feeding with soft finger foods like small pieces of ripe fruit, well-cooked vegetables, or toast. Always supervise your baby during meals and avoid choking hazards like whole grapes or nuts.
Be patient and persistent. It’s normal for babies to make faces or refuse new foods initially. Keep offering a variety of healthy options, and remember that learning to eat is a gradual process.
