Introducing new foods to your baby is an exciting milestone, but it can also be challenging to determine whether your little one genuinely enjoys a new dish. Here are some signs to help you tell if your baby likes a new food:
- Facial expressions: Babies are expressive, and their faces often reveal their true feelings about food. A smile, wide eyes, or an excited expression usually indicates enjoyment. Conversely, a grimace or frown might suggest dislike.
- Body language: Positive body language, such as leaning forward, reaching for the food, or opening their mouth in anticipation, are good signs. If your baby turns away or pushes the food away, they may not be fond of it.
- Sounds: Happy babbling or excited noises often accompany a positive food experience. Crying or fussing might indicate discomfort or dislike.
- Eating behavior: If your baby eagerly accepts multiple spoonfuls or reaches for more, it’s likely they enjoy the food. Spitting out the food consistently or refusing to open their mouth are signs of dislike.
- Swallowing: Observe if your baby is actually swallowing the food. If they’re letting it dribble out or actively pushing it out with their tongue, they may not like it.
Remember that it can take multiple exposures (sometimes up to 15-20 tries) before a baby accepts a new food. Don’t be discouraged if your baby doesn’t seem to like a food initially. Keep offering a variety of healthy options, and be patient as your little one’s palate develops.
