Essential Oils for Babies: Safety & How to Use Them
Essential oils have gained popularity for their potential health benefits, but when it comes to babies, extra caution is necessary. Here’s what parents need to know about using essential oils safely with infants:
Safety First:
- Always consult with a pediatrician before using essential oils on or around babies.
- Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to a baby’s skin.
- Avoid using essential oils on babies younger than 3 months.
- Keep oils away from babies’ eyes, nose, and mouth.
How to Use:
- Dilution: Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut or almond oil) before use. A safe ratio is 1-2 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.
- Diffusion: Use a diffuser in a well-ventilated room, away from the baby. Limit diffusion time to 30-60 minutes.
- Topical Application: After proper dilution, apply to the soles of the feet or back.
Recommended Oils: Lavender (for calming), Chamomile (for sleep), and Frankincense (for immune support) are generally considered safer options for babies when used correctly.
