Watch Out Helicopter Parents, Lawnmower Parenting Is Here
Move over helicopter parents, there’s a new parenting style in town: lawnmower parenting. While helicopter parents hover anxiously, lawnmower parents go a step further by actively removing obstacles from their child’s path.
Characteristics of Lawnmower Parenting:
- Solving problems for children before they arise
- Intervening in conflicts with peers or teachers
- Completing tasks that children could do themselves
- Shielding children from disappointment or failure
Potential Consequences:
- Lack of problem-solving skills
- Decreased resilience
- Entitlement mentality
- Anxiety when facing challenges
While the intention is to protect children, lawnmower parenting can hinder a child’s ability to navigate life’s challenges independently. Experts recommend allowing children to face age-appropriate obstacles to develop crucial life skills
