How To Talk To Your Kids About Suicide (Age-by-Age Guide)
Discussing suicide with children is a challenging but important task. The approach should be tailored to the child’s age and level of understanding.
For preschoolers (3-5 years):
- Keep explanations simple and concrete
- Avoid using the word “suicide”
- Focus on explaining that the person died because they were very sick in their mind
For school-age children (6-12 years):
- Be more direct, using the word “suicide” if appropriate
- Explain that sometimes people have thoughts of ending their lives when they’re very sad or sick in their minds
- Emphasize that there are always other solutions and people who can help
For teenagers (13+ years):
- Have open, honest conversations about mental health and suicide
- Discuss warning signs and how to seek help
- Provide resources like helpline numbers and websites
Regardless of age, always:
- Listen to their questions and concerns
- Reassure them it’s not their fault
- Encourage them to express their feelings
- Monitor their behavior for signs of distress
Remember, it’s okay to not have all the answers. The most important thing is to create an open, supportive environment where children feel safe discussing difficult topics.
