Foods to Never Feed Baby Before 1-Year-Old
Introducing solid foods is an exciting milestone, but certain foods should be avoided before a baby’s first birthday:
- Honey: Risk of infant botulism
- Cow’s milk (as a drink): Difficult to digest and lacks necessary nutrients
- Unpasteurized dairy products: Risk of foodborne illness
- Choking hazards: Whole grapes, nuts, popcorn, hard candies
- Added salt or sugar: Can harm developing kidneys and create unhealthy preferences
- Fruit juices: High in sugar and low in fiber
- Egg whites: Potential allergen (introduce whole eggs after 6 months if no allergy concerns)
- Shellfish and fish high in mercury: Potential allergens and toxin concerns
- Undercooked or raw meat, fish, or eggs: Risk of foodborne illness
- Caffeinated or sugary drinks: No nutritional value and can be harmful
Always consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice on introducing new foods to your baby’s diet.
